Daily stretch exercises for hairdressers: prevent RSI and keep your hands fit
Hairdressers put a lot of strain on their hands, wrists, and fingers. A short daily stretching routine, performed before and during work, reduces the risk of RSI and other repetitive strain injuries, and keeps your hands more flexible and stronger.

Why these exercises are important
Hairdressers are more prone to RSI, hand injuries, and chronic overuse than many other occupational groups. This is due to repetitive movements, prolonged strain, and intensive use of scissors and styling tools. Many of these complaints can be prevented with correct work technique, good tools, and daily stretches.
When to stretch?
Ideally, do these exercises before starting your workday and repeat them during breaks. This helps keep ligaments and supporting structures healthy. If you feel pain while stretching, stop or immediately reduce the pressure.
The daily stretch routine
Wrist stretch with palm up
Extend your arm straight out in front of you with your palm facing upwards. Gently pull the wrist into a stretched position and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat with both hands.Wrist stretch with palm down
Extend your arm straight out with your palm facing down. Gently bring the wrist into a stretched position and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat with both hands.Finger stretching and mobilization
Spread and stretch your fingers as shown in the illustration and repeat the movement ten times per hand. This reduces tension in fingers and hand muscles after prolonged cutting.
Important points of attention
Never use too much force while stretching.
Perform all exercises in a controlled and calm manner.
Do each exercise with both hands, even if you use one hand more.
Stop or immediately reduce pressure if you feel pain.
After the exercises
Gently shake your hands to stimulate blood circulation. If you also have shoulder or elbow pain, add stretches for those areas. If symptoms persist, seek medical or physiotherapeutic help.
Practical tip for the salon
Make this routine a fixed part of your workday: 2–3 short stretch moments of a few minutes take little time but contribute greatly to sustainable employability.
